What email provider FOSS guys would recommend today?

As in the topic:

Where do I move now with my email?

I would go for Fastmail, but they need my money… so I need something for free, storage doesn’t matter, need just email. Thx in advance for clues.

host your own, done

Host your own with hestia control panel, debian 12 for now.

Guys, come on…

Gmx gut oder night gut?

If you cannot self host your own. There is one pretty reputable option on F-Droid which is Tuta Mail. Outside of F-Droid there is also Proton Mail but it does have Google trash propietary code in it. (mainly to use firebase cloud messaging, I would also assume IAP.. Pretty much just general slop albeit with genuine functionality. Still doesn’t change the fact it’s forced Google slop however.)

And if you want to get into technicalities you could download Thunderbird or K-9 Mail and then use and manually set up a third party service like Murena.

I should say I don’t particularly suggest any of these as like with any of these none of these is a one size fits all solution and never will be. But these all can be used with open source apps (though not all of them are open source server side.) And they all have free plans.

Except Fastmail which has pretty neat app without evil trackers.

Their plans start at 5€ which has no sense for me. Pity…

There was/is Posteo. But when I was using it around 6-7 years ago, that email account got hacked, and for many other users too. Their support was very lame and kind of not knowledgeable. Finally after several requests when Posteo did nothing to help, I had to let go. I fought for more than 6 months.
'+ their plans made no sense after sometime, as I realized to have a 2FA, I had to pay extra.

:joy::rofl:

Sorry, the post must be at least 10 characters

Posteo has gotten better. 2FA (TOTP) is included in all plans (standard plan is €1/month) and the (limited) interaction I’ve had with their support was fine. To me, the service they offer now seems to be on par with other privacy-friendly providers.

I haven’t had the kind of issues you’ve experienced, though, so I can’t tell what their support is like when you really need them to do some work.

That kind of trouble I’ve only ever had with Google. Which led me to just give up on ever having a Google account again. Seems like a win in the end.:upside_down_face:

Mine was between 2017-2020 (I recall). That time they had stated there would be a 0.50 EURO extra for me. I was under the EURO currency mode.

Now I have everything of my own. So no need for any 3rd party ever.

I want to eventually do this but I don’t feel like I have comfortably researched this enough to do such a thing

  • What exactly do I need? Can any old up to date Debian install take care of it?
  • Do I need to leave it at my residence or can I take it with me? (Ignoring the obvious problem of downtime this would be important to me as I don’t like leaving important stuff behind)
  • Do I need a specialized device for it or again can any Linux install take care of it?
  • I am also scared of the maintenance burden of it as I already don’t have a lot of energy as it is
  • Are there any noticeable drawbacks to consider aside from the self liability aspect of it?

I can honestly just go on and on. Cause while I don’t mind experimenting I do have limited time on my hands and if i’m going to do something I need to be absolutely sure that it will work.

What do I need to learn to be able to host my own ?

Will revert to both of you tomorrow.

I did list some already. Which is Tuta, Proton and Murena.

Though I think Murena can actually be self hosted it offers a publically available service with a free plan. (As I said before though all options i listed have free plans)

Here’s some links.

https://murena.io/

Do note again I am not particularly recommending any of these. Some have good track records. Some better than others some worse than others you should try them out and do your own research. (Of note though I think you actually need a third party email to use as a recovery email to use Murena now. I think it was an attempt at trying to crack down on spam or something.)

And also since Murena does not have their own tethered email app

Some may consider this a good thing. I personally do and don’t. (On one hand it is good cause that means you’re not being forced into using any specific app for a widely open thing. On the other hand it can prevent the provider from implementing and streamlining special features and or protections.)

Either way if you want to use them you will need a email client. I will list some choices for those aswell.

Also do keep in mind if you don’t like Google. Proton’s mail app does have some Google dependencies in it that can make some undesirable connections. However there is a workaround for that by choosing to use the website version and then using You Have Mail | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository so you can still get notifications for that email address. The other applications listed do not have this problem. At least in their F-Droid version I cannot confirm for flavors outside of F-Droid.

Edit: by the way technically speaking I don’t think they are wrong for recommending self hosting as if you want FOSS email that is technically the only way to truly do it. As even if a service has it’s code Open Sourced and Free that wouldn’t mean anything for the actual publicly available service as there is no way to actually verify whether the server is running the same code or not and no way to vet the server either.

However I understand like you said you are not in a position to self host. As such the best you can do is try and use a reputable provider with a fully FOSS email app.

As such Tuta and Murena do have extra value over Proton in the case of FOSS.

Btw. I use K-9 as Mozilla removed possibility of configuring font size in TB. Shame.

Worthy notice that they state K-9 is exactly the same app as Thunderbird. Liars.

Fairmail has unbearable interface. Didn’t know Ltt… lemme check it

I remember that. And to be honest I was worried something like that may happen hence why I linked both.

FairEmail has a lot of issues I do agree. But still it is a Email client that can work well so I figured it would still list it.

As for Ltt.rs.. To be honest I wouldn’t know I actually have never used or tested that one. All I know about it is it’s design principles which is to be simple and maintainable and has been around for quite a bit now so I figured it might be worth listing

This is the limit:

Attention: You need a JMAP capable e-mail server to use Ltt.rs

That’s rather unfortunate. I mean that may be less of a problem in the future but right now that can definitely be a usability issue.

This one’s funny. Has only one option in settings: poll interval. But it may be useful.
