So it looks like its dead for good and we must all move over to whatever “mercurygram” is or forkgram.

Does anybody know if its possible to install one, try signing in to Telegram and then uninstalling Telegram FOSS if it works? My concern is uninstalling Telegram FOSS and ending up locked out of my account.

Install both clients to test or you have the option to get SMS codes using Telegram X client anyway…

I installed mercurygram and got a login code for mercurygram through Telegram FOSS. I have now uninstalled Telegram FOSS.

On the one hand I am happy that there are FOSS forks of it.

However it should be pointed out, that the normal chats, groups and channels in any Telegram client are not at all end to end encrypted. It is possible to have end to end encrypted chats, however if you switch clients those are gone. Your partners may be still sending you messages, in the new client you will just not even notice they sent you anything and never get the chance to read them. You can create new secret chats every time you try a new telegram client and hope all of your contacts don’t ever mess it up or just take it as it is: zero privacy messenger

All my secret chats got wiped when I changed client but I just re-invited those people to secret chats and explained I had swapped apps so history got wiped, it was no big deal.

I also use Signal too which I think is better security wise but its still isn’t perfect.
