Modern FOSS Compass and Navigation app without Ads, IAP or Tracking

Hello everyone,

I’m excited to share MBCompass, which is a modern, free, and open source Compass and Navigation app without Ads, IAP, or Tracking.

That’s support Compass and Navigation features with being lightweight and simple!

I built MBCompass, not just another FOSS compass app; it bridges the gap between a compass and a full navigation app

Features:

  • Shows clear cardinal direction and magnetic azimuths.
  • Displays magnetic strength in µT.
  • Live GPS location tracking on OpenStreetMap.
  • Sensor fusion for improved accuracy (accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope).
  • Light and dark theme support is controlled via Settings.
  • Keeps the screen on during navigation.
  • Landscape orientation support.
  • Built with Jetpack Compose and Material Design.
  • No ads, no in-app purchases, no tracking.
  • Runs on Android 5.0+
  • full list available on website

Even with all these features, MBCompass was just 1.35MB APK size with no ads, no IAPs, and no trackers

Why does it behave like this?

I don’t mean compass accuracy.

Sorry, that video is private and unavailable at least for me

Now?

BTW, what’s the best hosting for short videos?

Yeah, It shows now, YT is actually best, you can change this video title to something like “MBCompass app demo vx.x.x” your app version

I would have agreed, if I would not have started using things of my own. I would always go through things available, and if nothing fits me, tbvh, and if the crazy world was going nuts beyond, I will still try to stay away from foogletube.

But in this case, YT is actually best, when people search for apps, this type of video might come up, which is FOSS, a great alternative to paid, invasive apps with ads.

I do not disagree in terms, but the reason to promote FOSS apps over YT is very much odd. Maybe this is just me, and again, I understand, that is the first place everyone goes, so yeah maybe promoting is good there, but for anything & everything, nah…

Agreed, this is just for this type of content other than that the mentioned FOSS alternative is great always

Can you please mention the problem in detail? The sole video only doesn’t show the actual problem you’ve encountered.

I don’t know the English word to describe that compass turning isn’t fluent, but “jams”. You can see that on the video.
BTW YouTube studio interface of adding video is terrible on android via browser, and I will never use them app again.

Yeah, I understood! you’re mentioning the compass rose rotation isn’t smooth it like a lagging right ?

Why not DM here instead of on proprietary platforms?

Realme GT Neo2, stock Android 13, ColorOS 13.

That’s normal behaviour for all phone compasses. You need to wave it around in a figure 8 pattern as shown on your video to calibrate it.

Oh! I’ve not seen that.

hmm! I have saw this types of problem in some devices like POCO, REALME,. in the past. I have to take a look and try to fix this issue

What about you! You’re also experiencing this issue ? How MBCompass works on your device. Other than this feedback is always appreciated!
