I’ve been using gboard for few years but now i decide to trying it’s popular alternative
called heliboard
at first i don’t believe there is such good keyboard exist but after trying heliboard it now become my main keyboard completely replacing gboard
advantage of heliboard:
Keyboard layout that exact 100% same like gboard
suggestion / dictionary / correction is near to google
the only downside of heliboard that i found is
heli can’t fix a word based on setence
so i would encourage you to try heliboard you probably will like it too
link download to Heliboard:
thanks for reading and contribute i really appreciate it
Thank you for your recommendation. I’ll try Heliboard. And I’ll let you know my impressions. Although I think Heliboard will have a hard time beating Google Board.
I assume Heliboard is in the F-Droid repository. But if not, please tell me where I should look for the app. Thanks.
It is in the fd repo itself. BTW, it is far better compared to gboard and I believe OSS can be much better compared to proprietary ones. Only reason prop ones get more traction is the bundle of money and those named firms behind them. They get dedicated resources, whereas we thrive OSSs on donations and funding.
It’s not best unfortunately
For swipe typing you need external library, and then it works pretty well. And it’s very configurable.
It lacks voice typing, so I’ve tried Futo, there’s repo to add to your f-droid client. Futo is in alpha, that’s why works lame, I hope it will improve.
Because of flawless voice typing thx to Voice recognition APK, Gboard works flawlessly, and even improved on my old tablet mentioned in the thread about dark mode extensions, before some updates it was unusable - mistaken languages, lags…
Thx to Gboard I don’t have to install any other spying app.
I also have AOSP keyboard delivered with lineageOS for that tablet, I don’t even know where to download it to try on another devices, but works good and features swiping too.
I’ve read you can even voice type with Whisper on Heli but still can’t find how
Btm I can only glide type, although it’s not perfect, gboard recognises words bit better.
While I recognize that there are some apps that can be considered good alternatives to Gboard for certain users, it’s important to note that these alternatives may not provide adequate support for all languages.
Gboard is a universal (but proprietary, unfortunately) solution suitable for users around the world, supporting a wide range of languages and scripts.
For many FOSS keyboard apps, they offer decent support for Western languages, but they often lack comprehensive support for (East) Asian languages.
There are a few FOSS options that support CJKV and even Thai, but they have limited support for other scripts.
Also, handwriting input feature is particularly valuable for languages like Chinese and Japanese, but I haven’t come across any modern FOSS keyboard apps that offer similar handwriting capabilities.
I know for sure Asian language support and features are very minimal and not up to the mark compared to the European counter parts, which is understandable. Food for thought.
