… … Kitkat
If a user goes out of there way to download F-Droid, yeah 100% of them can figure out Shizuku. 100% of normies are not as hardcore as some of us here in terms of FLOSS. I know that because I figured out Shizuku so that means anyone can.
This is not needed now, and we like to keep it this way.
please dont throw rocks at me for according to ai but it says that there may be a “install anyway” button while attempting to install an apk from unverified and or blacklisted developers. it was calling this “advanced flow” and it does not need any adb or even dev options enabled.
edit:site called “dataconomy” writes:
While the initial verification plan proceeds, with early access launched yesterday, Google has introduced a concession. The company is developing an “advanced flow that allows experienced users to accept the risks of installing software that isn’t verified.” This installation method will include safeguards against coerced installations or scams, coupled with “clear warnings to ensure users fully understand the risks involved.”
maybe we arent cooked yet
The AI can’t read the future, yes, no…
Here’s a list of the 551 permissions implicitly granted to every app that’s granted Shizuku/ADB access (including Shizuku itself):
Yes, many people can and do figure out how to install and use Shizuku, but hardly any of them understand the security implications. Let’s not make it a requirement to grant 551 permissions to apps like F-Droid and Obtainium in order to install any APK we want on certified Android devices, while currently it only takes one.
Which part of FORBIDDEN is unclear? If you add conditions on top of the license, it’s not using that license any more, hence, not FLOSS.
I’m not knowledgeable about this topic, but I thought if someone like Muntashir says it now looks FOSS-compliant it must have some merit.
You need to ask one question: “If it’s FLOSS, why isn’t it in F-Droid?”
although it literally says there that you can’t distribute the app… which is against their own license, which means the license is void, which means… the app is not FLOSS
how can I spell this better? why do I need to repeat this every week? please go to Twitter or Fedi and tell those that keep recommending Shizuku that, first, it needs ADB so 100% of users will not use and second, it’s not FLOSS.
I would seek this one particular expression of exasperation (but not out of context) of Mr. Kter to drive home one important point:
This is the “bane” of a true democracy, if at all it could be said to be “bane”. We, the eternal novices, will continue to ask apparently “stupid” questions.
The more gifted members will have to be patient to gently answer such apparently “stupid” questions and take everyone along. Avoid being confrontational, Acerbic, Hurtful.
The only discretion that the more cognitively gifted members have is to decide if the stupid questions are because of a particular member being in the initial stages and having another area of specialisation, or are those questions to actually kill productive time.
To decide this one could have a hidden history page for each member: mentality, general intelligence, emotional intelligence, insight, sentience, introspection, reflection, focus, analytics, etc.
And the best of all: a short news service page with important updates in a very few words. Latest info, from the FOSS POV. Along with keywords that would help find anyone interested to glean further information from the internet.
In a healthy system everyone would become complementary to each other & specialised in his/her particular area of awareness.
This is how a social system becomes a civilisation, then the civilisation becomes matured. And self-propagating.
I find your long form text here offtopic, you were asked to not do this any more
It’s a lack of respect to not read before posting, even a simple search for “shizuku” in this topic would have revealed the same info in the previous 14 other posts
My intent isn’t to confront you, Mr. Kter. So I would leave the decision to the moderators.
One request to look at a particular POV: not all are mentally oriented to seek information from ‘texts’. For some, a long post-thead might appear like a text jungle.
Some are Visual, some, Tactile.
I acknowledge that you may have seemingly an enormous amount of work. My post wasn’t directed at you.
Also please note that your skill isn’t on par with ours. We acknowledge that you are gifted.
Just please be a little more tolerant with us.
I have been following the topic closely, albeit with much difficulty as I don’t have your skill or experience. I too have observed what you mentioned. So please accept my empathy.
Now let us be back to the main topic.
You need to ask one question: “If it’s FLOSS, why isn’t it in F-Droid?”
Except it is on F-Droid.
It’s a lack of respect to not read before posting, even a simple search for “shizuku” in this topic would have revealed the same info in the previous 14 other posts
I actually did read a majority of this forum. But forgive me for having a life so I did not read literally every single post. I don’t care to. Just like I don’t care to respond to dissect all of your whinging.
wait, what is?
No, they removed that in May. Now they only point out which parts of the repository are their trademark or similar under Apache 2.0 article 6:
This License does not grant permission to use the trade names, trademarks, service marks, or product names of the Licensor, except as required for reasonable and customary use in describing the origin of the Work and reproducing the content of the NOTICE file.
Citing this, they forbid the use of their icon, app name, application id and custom app permission. It’s easy to see how not being allowed to declare the permission prevents creating a fork that can be used as an instant replacement for Shizuku, but it’s not immediately apparent to me how any of this goes against the Apache license.
Mr. Kter,
Does F-Droid approve/agree with the Apache license? I consider it Evil (as it apparently deviates from the 'FOSS principle). This is of course My perspective. I own up my Bias.
see Please release the app on F-Droid · Issue #69 · RikkaApps/Shizuku · GitHub
so you say you can make a fork, use different name, app id, icon, permissions names? Yes, maybe you can
but, by that time you don’t “use Shizuku” are you? you use Freezuku or whatever… so… link to this app pls? Oh, it does not exist (yet)? Mmmkay,.,.
but yeah, keep saying we can…
I was merely arguing that it looks like Shizuku is published under an open source license that it fully adheres to these days, not commenting on the practicalities of their sort of “malicious compliance”.
But yeah, it’s kind of useless this way and I understand people disagree on whether it can really be considered FLOSS.
I would have been the first to recommend it if it was FLOSS… ![]()
(well, except the adb part I keep repeating that is
)
Ugh. One of the co-sponsors is my CA Assembly rep.
Unfortunately that legislation was not on my radar and I didn’t have a chance to give them heck about it.
This kind of legislation is easy to pass because superficially it “sounds good” to lots of not very tech-savvy people who don’t think about or care about all the collateral damage it causes.
