Android Messenger with a web-browser interface to access from PC?

MAKE an account means A NEW ONE

If already have an account it will log in just fine

There is a problem: Like I don’t want to disclose my presence on the network unless I want to, I also don’t want to know about other users’ accounts. Privacy when others or I need it. Means to connect if needed.

I didn’t specifically this broadcast feature in Telegram.

However, Quicksy says:

Other Quicksy users in your phone’s contact list will be recognized by the app

Please advise.

yes, Quicksy is thought out to mimic Whatsapp, Telegram and the rest so it is Easy

now, not sure if other apps allow you, BUT, Quicksy allows you to REJECT the Contacts permission, so you won’t see which other contact has Quicksy installed

yet, since it needs to be EASY, people that have you in their contacts list, will see that YOU use Quicksy

If you want to control who can know you have an account, use Conversations instead and only share your ID with the people you want.

(Since XMPP is federated, you can contact Quicksy users by their +XXXXXXXXX@quicksy.im XMPP address and they can contact you if you tell them your XMPP address)

Thank you for discussing with and informing me the pros and cons of privacy in jabber.

You wrote about conversation, but conversation.tm has the following note:

Collective | JoinJabber
Collective
Here you can find some recommended Jabber/XMPP service providers that offer to host an XMPP server for collective use by a group or organization

and

… Conversations.im is the commercial offer by the developer of the Conversations App …

Commercial? Without my testing the services of the app?

I am uneasy.

The app costs money on Google Play, that’s why it’s called commercial, I guess. Also they can host the service for you, say if you want rajiban@bestserverever.com and you know nothing about self-hosting.

Making an account on conversations.im has been free for years

There are plenty of other servers to choose from in that link, in https://providers.xmpp.net/ and in Server overview ¡ XMPP Compliance Tester

Ok. Good to know.
But does the usage of the service cost money?

I truly don’t know about self-hosting. Why would I need the hosting service separately? Isn’t installing the app and its usage for messaging supposed to be simple?

account = service, so no…

because you want to control you data, because you don’t want “others” to decide who you can talk to, etc

what does simple even mean? why are you here exactly since you could install Facebook from Google Play and talk?

let’s hope they stay the same, and future leaders don’t decide to peruse past conversations to punish future crimes…

Didn’t get your POV. The point that you indicate.

Since Google Play already offers you want you want…

Yes, in jurisprudence it is said that rules can’t be applied retrospectively in reasonable societies for the era when they didn’t exist.

future leaders, future laws, their laws

also your past actions might indicate future actions

hope for the best, prepare for the worst

Yes, but at the cost of collecting information about my browsing habits and other tracking information to suit its adverts for me. I don’t appreciate this.

ah,right, and many don’t appreciate having Facebook (in Whatsapp), Telegram, Signal, etc collecting information on them… so they self-host their XMPP/Matrix/servers

Yes, this part I understand. But we as a collaborative group also find ways to raise money to collectively fund such self-hosting services.
So in the end: is this self-hosting service expensive?
Till date I have not paid anything, except myself and my habits being tracked. I don’t have leaky habits. So I didn’t care.
Yes, just one one-time paid app: Text Aloud TTS by Andrew Kochaniak.

many run their XMPP servers on simple Raspberry Pi devices, but knowledge is needed (or defer to conversations.im to host for you)

yes, buying a domain costs, see online registrars, some are cheaper than other

That means I won’t require conversation.im servers if I self-hosted XMPP server on my laptop?

Yes, this part I am aware of. But I didn’t link my using XMPP service to this aspect.

Ok then. I will find out ways to self-host an XMPP server from my system. If it is feasible at all.

But there is a catch: my laptop can’t be switched on all the time. So is there a temporary dump available when my laptop is down? XMPP in my case hits a temporary roadblock.

You can use the Conversations app with your server, yes

there always is, you gotta find the right balance between all these options

good luck!

Some email providers also provide XMPP account registration. Check to see if yours does.

Thank you, Mr. Cue, for your suggestion. I don’t use an email client. I use web-browser on my laptop to access emails. So I won’t like to complicate things so that I am compelled to manage more multiple apps than my time permits me.

In the meanwhile I have installed the conversations app, created an account with a user@domain name with one xmpp service provider and solved certain aspects, like accessing the conversations account from my laptop’s web-browser with kind support from the support service.

So I am all set.

But thank you for trying to provide support, Mr. Cue. Much appreciated.
