why f-droid won’t move to xapk for less weight and faster downloads?
Most likely because XAPK packages are not natively supported by Android: you have to either use a dedicated app to install said packages, or manually install the package by decompressing it, copying the OBB file and installing the APK package inside.
Technically speaking F-Droid could implement the functionality to handle the installation of the xapk format but I honestly think that would be far more effort than it’s worth.
Not to mention the F-Droid client is already very complex as it is I think new features would have to be very carefully considered. And also it would likely hurt compatibility to require xapk as a format as third party clients would also need to implement the support. Also it would invalidate the purpose of allowing users to download from the website should they prefer aswell.
explain where do the weight gains come from?
