What are Push Notifications?

Could you explain me what are Push Notifications ?

I have a Nextcloud server and installed this app, NextPush NextPush | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository

I linked it to my Nextcloud server with the Nextcloud app UnifiedPush Provider UnifiedPush Provider - Apps - App Store - Nextcloud but then, what to do ? What is the use ?
