Welcome a new Fennec F-Droid

In about:config. Try typing google

picture from your firewall app when that domain is contacted by Fennec during normal browsing

@lixi Fennec doesn’t have a SafeBrowsing API key configured

When I open Fennec, it automatically connects to websites without me opening any tabs.

firefox.settings.services.mozilla.com

mozilla.map.fastly.net

gitlab.com (connects for wallpaper)

Is uBlacklist making Fennec slow for anyone else?

maybe related

Settings->“about”->touch the logo 7 times->back to “secret settings”->“enable composable toolbar”

With bottom bar / With top bar

Sometimes it’s called: Enable Menu Redesign (Iceraven), Waterfox has this enabled by default now. Trying to get used to it

BTW. Have you found description of other options?

Any clues if I could make Fennec as fast as Iceraven? The latter is 25% faster in Speedometer of benchmark.org, I’ve posted screenshots some time ago. Waterfox is the same and Ironfox 25% slower.

Hello @relan , I noticed the following:

My Zenfone 2 is affected because:

  • It runs Android 6 (stock ROM) and there is no Android 8+ third-party ROM for it.
  • It’s x86 and runs a 32-bit ROM.

Per your comment on GitLab, it seems to be trivial to revert Mozilla’s removal of x86-32 support from A-S.
How about the Android 8+ requirement? Is it trivial to make Fennec 144+ work on older devices (running Android 5/6/7)?

Iceraven uses Gecko (the engine) built by Mozilla. I suspect it has a performance advantage because it’s built with LTO and PGO. I tried enabling them for Fennec but compilation fails with obscure errors. Need to investigate this.

I’m afraid lowering the minimal Android version requirement is very hard. Each new Android version introduces new APIs and deprecates old ones. If an app supports Android 8.0+ it simply doesn’t care whether the APIs it uses are present on Android 5.0 or not. So porting to older Androids will require some non-trivial work (and more work for every new Firefox release) that I’m not willing to do, to be honest.

Although I don’t know what’s PGO and LTO thank you for being interested in the topic of performance.

As said before: I’ve tested all possible Fifox clones at browserbench, and later in everyday use. Only Iceraven differs in performance to its advantage. I’d like to see Fennec doing even better  if that’s possible.

Libraries and programs are built from source code files in two steps: 1) source code files are compiled into so called object files, 2) object files are combined (“linked”) into a program or a library. At the first step the optimizer has no idea about the context where some function is called, while at the second step a lot of semantic information is lost and the optimizer has to play safe. LTO (Link Time Optimization) allows the optimizer to see and understand all the code in the library or program. Thus it can optimize more aggressively.

PGO (Profile Guided Optimization) uses external information on how a program is used and thus optimizes it for particular workflows. This of course depends on the quality of tests, that generate this external info, but usually gives more gains than losses.

In lieu of this I’ve installed Lagrange on my hopeless Android 6

the new Internet for the old! Hopefully it’ll never drop support since the game-dev tech stack it’s built on is very chill, still supporting ancient things like the PSP.

Any plans to update to new version? 145.0

It seems 4 cycle did not have any updates

Isn’t 145 published today? What does that have to do with past cycles?

 I mean there was minor updates before. Not only this one

144.0.x had minor fixes (not security updates), so I decided to skip them.

Will push Fennec 145.0.0 today.

New update didn’t had new tab UI option in secret settings, like ironfox have rn.

new tab UI option in secret settings

Do you mean the tab bar? It’s under Customize, not Secret settings.
