Welcome a new Fennec F-Droid

Youtube videos continue to play in background on Firefox/Fennec if the “Desktop Site” switch is set.

That does seem to be working for me, the audio keeps playing and I get a “A site is playing media” notification.

Many legit reasons.

It breaks regularly, either partly or completely. That goes with the territory, sure, however it means the browser might be the only recourse, until the team has a chance to push a fix out of the door (which to their credit they usually seem to do fairly quickly).

(As a consequence, manual updating, which sucks, is almost inevitable.)

NewPipe doesn’t support privacy-friendly front-ends like Invidious or Piped.

The UI has a ton of quirks, that make it not intuitive and harder to use effectively than it has any right to; one glaring example is the background player which is obviously designed with music in mind, and can be a pain to deal with otherwise.

There is no real favorites, only playlists, which are also music-centric, hence keeping tabs on content that you might want to watch or rewatch at a later stage is unwieldy and cluttered.

I could go on, but let’s note a few positives instead:

  • The player controls nicely.
  • Fine tuning of playback speed and pitch.
  • Offlining video or audio works better for me than downloading directly from Invidious.

Not meaning to slam NewPipe, it’s a decent app and I’m glad it exists, but since you asked…

There are indeed a few usability problems in NewPipe. Was wondering why there is no forth / back buttons with configurable duration for each of the two operations. But as I am still new to NewPipe, maybe I missed something.
And as stated by fernlover: I prefer using Invidious over YouTube.

The fact, that Fennec is indeed able to play videos in background (continue to play audio that is) after switching to desktop version makes this even more obscure. Just shows there is technically nothing holding back Fennec from exposing the same behavior when using mobile website version (thin ice as technically unsure if this is a correct statement). But since Bromite is able to do it, so should Fennec. Probably worth a feature request for Fennec to overthing the current default.

For navigating the playlist, eg. next video? There is…

Or for going forward/backward during a video? You tap the right/left sides of the video, more taps will escalate the skipping duration (new feature since 1 or 2 releases ago)

Thank you for sharing

Another hidden UI with zero discoverability

Was pleasantly surprised that LineageOS 19 added an emoji key to the keyboard and got rid of the v18.1 zero discoverability long press of the enter key to invoke emoji picker. Wondering why this is so common in Android world.

Ain’t that a keyboard setting?

That’s the Youtube default in browser too, right?

Ain’t that a keyboard setting?

Maybe, but for me on LineageOS 18.1 the default was different and the change to a more sane default happend with LOS 19.

That’s the Youtube default in browser too, right?

Not on iOS. As soon as you switch to fullscreen you have the forward | backward 15 sec options in player control.

That’s a strange answer on this forum lol

We are discussing UX, discoverability of features and sane defaults. I am not stating a preference for platform but a clear preference on UX design. And as it happens there are quite a few aspects where iOS does a superior job. I am not saying it doesn’t also come with a ton of dark patterns.

Hi everyone

Is it possible to change download folder or set Fennec to ask every time? I tried fiddling with browser.download.* controls in about:config but couldn’t get it to work.

Also is there a way to make use of userscripts? There are no script managers among supported addons but I’ve read Firefox Nightly allows installing addons from personal collection at addons.mozilla.org

Edit: Ok it seems the procedure is available in Fennec too, now I only need to create account on AMO in order to create “collection”…

Where should bugs be reported? Since the lastest LOS19 upgrade with August Sec patches the fennec chrashes realy often. I have created a log, butr don’t now where to report it. In the official mozilla fenix bug trakcer or in a special one for fennec?

Thanks Micha

Think it’s okay here.

Mull crashes too?

@Micha-Btz

Can you reproduce the issue with official Firefox? If so report here Issues · mozilla-mobile/fenix · GitHub

Otherwise Issues · relan / fennecbuild · GitLab

I can’t see any explicit error in the logcat you posted.
Nor have I seen any crash issues across my deivces.

Can you elaborate what device you have? Any modifications you’ve made?
What happens before it crashes? Do you open a specific page?

what is mull?

pixel 5, LOS 19 without gapps, root magisk frdoid and aurora

fennec closes if I open a link in other app, sometimes from mail k9mail or signal or fennec webpage start link.

Will test it with original fenix.

Micha

Many of you have noticed that F-Droid client does not show an icon for Fennec. This is going to change soon!

Also the description of Fennec F-Droid will become translatable to any language supported by Android. But before we open the doors to translations, I’d like to listen to your feedback about the description text:

Please comment either here or in the merge request.

Good afternoon.
What is your opinion ? Switch to Waterfox from Google Play or stay on Fennec F-Droid?
I have a phone with Google Play services and the F-Droid application installed.

Deleting my suggestion. Ignore if already read.
