Updating apps/K-9 Mail question

Hi,

I have two questions:

1- rather than using the F-Droid app, I have been downloading apks for aps on my desktop and transfering them to my smartphone and installing them this way. Will I still get notified whenever updates are available and how do I then update?

2- is there a difference between the K9 mail app in Google Play Store vs the version on F-Droid?

Since you are just using the web browser, that’s a no.

Yes, the one on the Play Store is outdated, the last update is from 2018.

Thanks, so how do I know there is an update available for a specifi app, and how can I update it? For example, I have Fennec browser and in the settings I could not find an otion to check for updates…

You can use the F-Droid client app instead of downloading the APKs manually. It’s the only option where you get notifications with updating them.

Also are another F-Droid clients there that supports updating. If you’ve installed a client, you have a app that’s a complete App Store.

This is not completly true, the stable version is updated and released on 2018. But you can enable beta releases on the play store where you also get latest version. That says their website: Download

F-Droid has also the latest pre-release, but it’s building from source. So the features of the PlayStore Beta version and the F-Droid version are the same, but we build the app from source and sign it outself.

Oh yes, you’re right. Seems they’ve been working hard on it. Anyway, why use Play Store when you can use F-Droid?

Thanks, I know there s the F-Droid store app but I don’t want to use another app - I want to use as few as possible. So how do I check manually and how do I upate?

Yeah, just install the F-Droid App from our Website. Install it, and open it. Then you can install, search and update apps you want.
Searching is over the small search icon right able, and updating is on the buttom menu bar.

You misundestood me - I DON’T want to use another app! That is why I downloaded the apks to my computer and transfered them to the phone with USB. I DO NOT want to use the F-Droid store app on my phone.

Then you’re unable to get notifications on updates. You can only manually look for updates. Sorry…

But THAT is my question: How do Icheck(where?) and how do I then update?

This is like if you want to make phone calls without a phone, you simply cannot. For updating manually just install the new version and that’s all.
There are lightweight F-Droid clients too: Aurora Droid, Foxy Droid…
Android already has a “battery optimization” that prevents many apps from running in the background, and you can configure it to your preference.

Well, if you really want to do it manually, you can keep a list of all your apps, together with their version numbers. Then periodically open the F-Droid website, search for each app and see if there is a new version. If there is, download and install the apk.

When you use the F-Droid client, it does all that automatically. You just have to press “update”.

Thank you. Would I need to uninstall the old version first? That would mean losing all the settings…

There are desktop command line clients for F-Droid that can simplify your workflow:

No. If you always use the F-Droid version and don’t mix with the Google Play version of the same app, you can just install it as an update.

But I don’t understand how. Let’s say I have K-9 mail installed via my desktop, meaning I downloaded the app onto my computer, transfered it with USB to my android I clicked on the file to install it. So then I see a new version on the F-Droid website - I download the new apk and transfer it to my android again with USB and THEN? Will it let me install the new version when an older version is installed, and also import my settings?

Yes, it will allow you to install the new version and the data will be kept.
