[Tutorial & Tips] Easy Retro Gaming Setup

Hi today i will give you easy tutorial to setup your retro gaming on modern device or platform

Requirements:

  1. Android Devices
  2. Retroarch (For light gaming)
  3. Standalone Emu (For heavy gaming)

Let’s start with Retroarch, this is universal emulator created by community user can use it to play almost all retro game but at the end of the day i can’t recommend you to depend on Retroarch entirely because for heavy core especially it usually didn’t work well with various issues

Setup Retroarch:

  1. Download Retroarch Lite by Neil4
  2. Open and download core that suitable only for light gaming
  3. get your game copy and enjoy the game

for other heavy gaming:

  1. download a Standalone emulator Example
  2. setup the emulator & get your copy of the game
  3. enjoy

now i will share which core that considered light and which core is not

Light Core (Supported on Retroarch)

  1. NES (Fceumm)
  2. SNES (SNES9X)
  3. GBA (mGBA)
  4. SEGA Gen (PicoDrive)
  5. Sharp X1 (X Millennium)

Heavy core:

  1. NDS (Melon or Drastic)
  2. PSP (AetherSX or PPSSPPP)
  3. Game Cube

FAQ

• Why only light core that are suitable on Retroarch?

• Emulation is complex and Retroarch is developed by community

(Open Source) so it’s clear you can’t expect too much on them especially for heavy gaming so divide or plan B is needed for mitigation

• isn’t that drastic proprietary?

yes but like i said before you can’t entirely depend on open source because of rising issues

• Why Retroarch Lite?

Because no complicated menu, very simple UI & UX and finally most important thing is it just work

why not RetroArch | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository which is on F-Droid?

It does not “just work”?

well for some people original might just work but if you want more simple version of UI / UX + minimal setting user can go for Retroarch Lite

anyway i will update the answer on main thread

add lite to f-droid then

well i am not the dev behind the Retroarch lite but your idea is good as well anyone feel free to open issues on Retroarch Lite official Repo

hope dev want to add it to F Droid
