Silence problem on Graphene OS (Android version 15)

I am using Silence as a messaging app to encrypt SMS/MMS.

Now, I get no notifications on new SMS (but the one sent by another Silence user). Also, I do not receive MMS. Additionally, all SMS sent through silence to another Silence user is sent twice (Silence always displays this message : “Duplicate message.”).

I’m using this version from F-Droid : 0.16.12-unstable. The same issue appears with this version : 0.15.16

Anybody have similar issues ? If yes, How do you fix them ?

yes, known issue, something has changed in Android 15

the source repo is gone, even if you have a fix we’d need to rehost it ourselves

OK, I get the point.

Nonetheless, there is no plan to save this app ? The UI and UX of this app is awesome. It’s using the signal protocol to encrypt SMS/MMS (which is rock-solid). I strongly believe that this app adds something useful to the FOSS ecosystem. I would be dramatic to let it die.

I loved this app, too. Silence website seems to be dead…

Another issue with Silence is that it is not compatible with phones that enforce 64-bit code only. (I doubt “code” was the correct word there.)

The source is here:

We’ve fixed that >1 year ago, Encrypted SMS and malware scanning | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository

So far

That source code page seems to not open at all. I have been trying for few weeks now. The domain itself is no longer available (as hosted).

The source linked in F-Droid points to a dead domain, but its Github mirror is still there. I checked before posting.

That’s great! I’ll try that out, though I won’t like leaving behind the customization of Textra.

No no. I am not denying that. What I mean is, the domain where it got moved.
Git is 5 years dead, and the moved out domain too. If someone forks it and tries to update it, probably that might help. But reviving dead repos is very much time consuming.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here.

I am an F-Droid user/fan ever since I got introduced to it.

Anyway, does anyone have an idea as to why, suddenly, around 2 weeks ago, I and the other users that I know who use Silence, started getting the 0.16.12-unstable version in the app update list? I have been using the 0.15.16 version for almost 2 years now.

I find it rather unusual because it says on F-Droid that the app has not been developed anymore and the source repo is no longer available.

EDIT: For reference, I have seen the 2023 post by @Licaon_Kter regarding encypted sms and the versions are mentioned. My question is on the issue of as to why the 0.16.12-unstable suddenly becomes “suggested” and is now on the app update list.

Because I’ve been testing that since forever, and worked better than the “stable” one.

Also, it might not matter soon as the app is no longer developed.

I also wanted to do this since I fixed arm64 but somehow forgot.

Thanks for that. So, in this instance, since the developer is MIA, the “suggested” tag is completely pushed recently by the F-Droid team? Please confirm.

It is a wonderful app. It solves that plain text nature of SMS.

Yes, more or less, I took a decision, hope it’s a good one

Thanks a lot, I was putting that update on hold until looking if major issues where known or not.

Fearing it might have been the repo being unreachable that triggered this change.

Thanks again for your work.
