Is anyone making more professional apps that function as effective as popular non-open source apps? I like the idea but, where are the options?
Define âprofessionalâ?!
Iâd say there are quite a few. Just off the top of my head:
- Nextcloud - listing on F-Droid: file sharing/synchronization app with a professional development team and commercial support
- Element - listing on F-Droid: federated messaging app with commercial hosting and lots of users in the public sector
- Home Assistant - listing on F-Droid: âsmart homeâ system with off-the-shelf hardware available for purchase
Again, thatâs just the handful which immediately come to mind. Nonetheless, professional or commercial development doesnât automatically make the apps better quality - there are hundreds of absolutely fantastic apps made by amateur and volunteer teams. F-Droid itself is substantially volunteer-run and doesnât have any commercial offerings!
