What has this thread turned into?
Exactly my point. Why are you all behaving as if F-Droid is not prone to things? We are doing everything we can to ensure things are what they are. The trust is not broken anywhere. All we request is, do not fight, but get things done nicely.
This will & can go on and on forever. Let us stop here and give it some breather for all.
I think it should be said:
Thank-You F-Droid for choosing to create the new “Religion” category rather than adding the NSFW flag. This is a good, logical, and commonsense solution which makes it easier to find these types of apps for users that actually want them ![]()
I am all for this to be honest cause likewise I am not interested in any religious apps. Not going to state why cause that’s a can of worms and definitely not something to be discussed on this Forum but I have my reasons.
I do also think this is something that benefits everyone from all sides aswell.
Having said that though I do gotta say I think this thread was absolutely atrocious and a poor display of human behaviour. Started off fine but quickly got out of hand. That is all.
I think that when completely outrageous behavior happens, it does need to be called out so it can be corrected.
Categorizing the Bible as NSFW was completely outrageous and obviously unreasonable. We all know the Bible in fact does not belong in the same category as what everybody knows NSFW normally means and pretending it does isn’t just disagreement: it’s dishonest. In this case, it was being used as justification for a radically extreme form of very one-sided ideological censorship which looked to any reasonable person to be happening totally intentionally and maliciously, in bad faith, strongly aligning with the implicitly anti-Christian, explicitly left wing ethos (or at least reputation) of F-Droid. That needed condemning in no uncertain terms. It could have been originally done as an honest mistake – but it sure didn’t look like one.
Maybe some people went a little too far in their rhetoric condemning this, but the point did need to be made and made loudly. It was speaking truth to power.
About this … human rights are literally the single most political thing that has ever existed in the entire history of mankind. You cannot, no matter how hard you try, even imagine any concept which is somehow more of a purely abstract political thing than the concept of human rights. It’s the most political thing in politics, beside which even voting rules in Cognress are a little bit less political than this is by comparison. This entire argument is really, really obviously, transparently, obnoxiously stupid. You can say your ideas are right because they’re based on human rights without being stupid, but oh my God, pretending your argument somehow isn’t political is deeply stupid. Rights and who should have them are of course the main thing politics is about: arguably the only thing politics is about.
But if you want to start spouting nonsense like, “Human rights aren’t political: they’re morality” then I can respond with, “You can’t legislate morality” (which is also total nonsense)
Outrageous behavior? On F-Droid?? Never been there before a few religious zealots decided they want special rules.
That isn’t what happened, or even close to what happened, in any way at all, and you know it. What you may not know is how this isn’t the first incident of outrageous behavior, with F-Droid trying to tell users what they should believe or think.
The point of open source should be that the users control the software, not to create software that controls the users.
IIUC, @BenMcLean 's point is that though Bible has NSFW content, we shouldn’t say it’s NSFW because it’s so important. But @BenMcLean does not want or can’t provide the reason and simply call people who don’t agree with that “dishonest” and “in bad faith”.
So I would say it makes no sense to debate with religious zealots because they are zealots. ![]()
The real zealot here is you, who are trying to erase people’s culture and people’s faith. Obviously neither the Bible nor the Koran belong in the NSFW category. If they did, every Reddit, forum, Wikipedia and news app should go there first.
If you are playing dumb, you deserve an Oscar.
This fiasco was largely generated by you and your posts. Perhaps you were the core instigator. If you are, take pride in having alienated about 30% of f-droid users, diminished trust and lowered donations. You really stuck a knife in f-droid. F-droid should neither be promoting any religion or any sexuality or political belief, nor should it be repressing any of the above. The only political advocacy F-droid should include is for freedom from surveillance and freedom from political repression.
It you @linsui who have attacked the core of f-droid values and compromised its mission.
If such people’s culture and faith is that anyone who don’t believe their god should go to the hell, they are exactly zealot and the cult they believe should be erased.
take pride in having alienated about 30% of f-droid users
Lol, why should I be friendly to people who believe that I should go to the hell??
F-droid should neither be promoting any religion or any sexuality or political belief
And excluding religion text from NSFW AF is exactly promoting the religion.
By the way, there are only less than 30% Christians are evangelical. Other Christians do not believe the Bible so much.
Centrality to the Western canon – a historical circumstance which transcends all questions of religion or politics – is the primary reason. Without the Bible, you’re illiterate. Second reason: The Bible shouldn’t be marked NSFW because it absolutely should (must) be safe to read the Bible in the workplace and therefore the Bible is and should be literally safe for work.
But also, you know these reasons. I don’t think you’re genuinely confused on these points.
mute the thread linsui, you have no chance against the bible app cabal, ruuuuun
I would like to take the chance to remind everyone that the original merge requests that labelled religious texts NSFW were swiftly rolled back more than 2 months ago. Religious texts are not labelled NSFW and we are actively working on clarifying the NSFW anti-feature to improve how it is implemented.
I would like to remind everyone of F-Droid’s core mission, which is to promote FOSS apps and distribute them in a safe and secure way to users around the world. This is the goal, nothing more, nothing less.
I would also like to point out that forum threads close automatically if there is no activity for 2 months. Interestingly enough, on the day the thread was meant to naturally close, discussion has sprung up again. This is disappointing because I was grateful it had appeared as though we had put this sensitive discussion behind us.
I would like to politely and respectfully ask to put this behind us once more, instead of fanning the fire on an issue that was already corrected more than 2 months ago.
F-Droid Contributor linsui owes the entire community an apology. He’s the official representative here with a contributor badge who has single-handedly turned what could have been a misunderstanding into an internal war. I’m not sure what all of linsui’s agenda is but it seems that a core part of it is fracturing the F-Droid community.
The F-Droid executive should examine very carefully Linsui’s contributions and agenda. Is there a dark pattern here? With friends like this, F-Droid doesn’t need enemies.
He certainly doesn’t owe any apology to me.
There are probably better communities for your than F-Droid.
Per Karl Popper’s paradox of tolerance, unlimited tolerance leads to the disappearance of tolerance because intolerant groups will exploit tolerance to gain power and destroy it. If the admins are not willing to act decisively, this community is walking dead. Already we see “community members” driving the wedge. Witness:
Just because people can write a definition of NSFW that would include religious texts doesn’t mean that it’s not safe for work to bring religious texts to work unless you have a bigoted workplace that rejects freedom of religion ideologically. That’s what “not safe for work” means. Once again, bigots love to rewrite language and history to push their propaganda and destroy unity and community.
