Latest f-droid update: Version 1.6.1 - Added on 2015-02-21
It seems to be the perfect replacement for the official MiLight app that probably calls home! See my post here
You can find some further information on this application’s page on the F-Droid wiki, specifically under maintainer notes. Hopefully an f-droid developer will respond to explain the issue better.
In addition to asking here, you could try contacting the upstream developer so they can make the proper changes to get this built again.

Whoops, I forgot to reply to the issue I raised with upstream two
years ago: Provide build flavor without play-services · Issue #38 · eliotstocker/Light-Controller · GitHub
Anyway, they still use play-services, so we cannot build it. Feel free
to help upstream to provide a build flavor that does not require
non-free dependencies.
