I’m trying to add the Cromite repository to F-Droid Basic and I get an error.
Repository address I’m using is Cromite Browser
Official F-droid repo url: Cromite Browser
What I mean to say is, it is working. I just checked as well.
Ahh, Jan 30 last release. I get it. But the version number is latest. So pribably some metadata issue here.
Finally got it figured out… it was not working with Proton VPN! I tried again using the URL you gave, but I still got the same error Socket Timeout error:
I was able to add all other repositories I desired (Bitwarden, FUTO, SimpleX, etc.) except the one for Cromite, so I was not thinking it was an issue on my end.
I tried rebooting the phone, disabling my DNS service, scanning the QR code, all without success, but when I disabled Proton VPN, it worked.
So after I added the repository, Cromite appeared as an app in need of an update. In fact the Cromite that was installed 6 months ago on my phone via the standard F-Droid app (not Basic) I noticed has not been updated in 2 months!
So at some point about 2 months ago the Cromite repository URL became incompatible with my Proton VPN. I say became incompatible, because I have been using Proton VPN ever since I installed Cromite about 6 months ago.
So here is the concern: Unless this is resolved, I will have to disable Proton VPN for every future Cromite update.
And who knows, maybe in the future another repository will stop working with Proton VPN and I won’t notice it until months later?
Perhaps to make known this type of security vulnerability of an app not updating, the F-Droid app could daily check to see if all installed repositories are still accessible and if not, notify the user. For example, “We found your Cromite repository is no longer accessible from your device. We have confirmed the repository is working on our end. There may be an incompatibility issue with your VPN. Please submit an error report here…”
Update: switching my Proton server location from one US State to another also allows access to the Cromite repository.
