One of the most important features that users (ok, at least I) expect from app store are:
- Good search. Unfortunately the F-Droid has a bug(s) with this.
- Ratings. Due to privacy concerns the F-Droid doesn’t have this, while technically this might be at least partially implemented e.g. based take GitHub starts or download count.
- Recommendations. At least based on the installed app or propose FOSS alternatives e.g. Chrome to Fennec. It will be totally fine to just pick a few apps in each categories to propose them by default, some kind of “editor’s picks”.
- Taxonomy i.e. good categorization like “games for kids”.
And the last is probably the easiest thing to make. Currently there are only a few categories and as far I understood it’s even less categories than the PlayStore has Google Play Store Categories
In addition the PlayStore has “search tags” Choose a category and tags for your app or game - Play Console Help
And it looks like the “Family” categories are for kids. I’m especially interested in this because kids games in the PlayStore are pure evil: dark patterns, explicit scenes, ad bloating etc. etc. The F-Droid can’t offer anything really interesting but at least something to start with. I had to scroll over hundred games to find some that can be interesting for little kids. If you can add such a category that would be really great.
The Debian also has a lot of “package sections” https://packages.debian.org/sid/ some of them useful like Mail or Admin utils.
So what do you think about adding of detailed categories?
