Home network setup and so on, with android and other headless devices

A friend of mine did a duck duck go search for home network operation best practices. The first two results were the following PDFs at nsa dot gov and defense dot gov. Would you download them, over Tor? Would you open them? How, on an air gapped device or what? More to the point, what’s a good guide to setting up and securing a home network?

Finding and ssh’ing to all my friend’s devices is getting a bit tedious; there has to be a better way than ping and guess? Thanks in advance.
