Excuse my ignorance but is this something phone manufacturers could bypass? Would approaching specific brands to ask that F-Droid be pre-installed?
I am a fan of F-Droid and as a user I would consider it an advantage if a phone had some advanced “developer mode” (or some other obscure setting) where the user has to “accept the risk of not using Google verified software” and enable F-Droid in their own image?
I was thinking that we could reach out to certain manufacturers and campaign for them to enable F-Droid as a feature.
For example we could write a petition to Nothing to include F-Droid in Nothing OS at least via some obscure special setting?
There will be no problem installing F-Droid itself, the problem is that google’s proprietary malware, that is given full control over the system, will henceforth disallow instalaltion of APKs downloaded from F-droid. There is nothing special an OEM can do to both include and bypass google’s proprietary malware, it’s the same kind of technical hacks through adb or root privilegde, and the problem with that from OEM’s point of view is that whatever bypass might be detected by google’s propriatery malware (if not today then tomorrow) and cause apps that are married to google’s proprietary malware (like aforementioned banking apps) to refuse to work, and then people would complain. They could add a big warning on the toggle - “your banking app will stop working”, but then who will use it? If (almost) nobody will be using it, then why bother?
The only real options for an OEM are
- include google malware and bow to it (buzzword: stock android)
- exclude google’s malware along with apps that love it so much (buzzword: degoogled android)
Something a lot of people want is for OEMs to either support option 2 out of the box as an OS variant with warranty, or at the very least an option to unlock the device (bootloader) to install the alternative OS from third parties voiding any warranty. You can petition accordingly.
The option of fighting google’s malware through hacks is not something any OEM would be willing to do, I don’t think.

Can’t each of these mischievous apps be put in isolation cells, wrappers, but yet be allowed to run normally otherwise? Difficult, is it? So that they are allowed to look around them yet get to see only only darkness all around them?
Another point being that if the OS is replaced, like with Graphene, is this already accomplished, as Graphene says, creating invisible prisons – Sandboxes – around such apps? How deep could this reach to have these mischievous apps remain blind?

On my all apps query point: I can understand if apps like PrivacyStats - IzzyOnDroid F-Droid Repository are querying all packages. But otherwise, no!

These points, afaik, some may, some may not. These apps work in a very bad manner. They exploit everything and have some manners to bypass as well. I am not a software developer, so may not be able to explain in technical language, but, we should run some tests with these OS and see the result. Gather proofs as well. Like when we do UAT, we gather and note each step.
In my old OnePlus 5, I use LOS A15 for now. They will soon get to A16. I am travelling, and on my holidays, so will try and see things there when I am back home.
The proofs should give foogle some sense of what is malware and what level of crap is filling up the so called secure system they claim it to be.
Name me one app which is even near to being called invasive or using unwanted permissions where not required. Some developers may not realize and add them, but F-Droid, other devs and its users shows them the path and they happily change (comply was a wrong choice). They understand what respecting privacy and one’s space means. They see the ultimate light.

Well, I got an Email from Google demanding my ID, so I reported them for Phishing. We should all do that, and report Google for Phishing, it might actually have an impact on this too, since then Email companies could report Google to the various governments around the globe, and bring more attention against Google.
I know it is kind of irrelevant, but if Google is reported for Phishing, their Developer Verification scheme will instantly fail because it’s part of their (and also the governments) plan to control everybody.
No. That is not doing things the right way, nor in good faith. Also, this kind of step just shows us in bad light. We will fight the right way, with relevant details. Take legal stance where necessary.

However, what Google is doing technically falls under the umbrella of phishing. Taking sensitive information is considered phishing, a more serious form of phishing mind you. This isn’t just taking accounts, it’s taking somebody’s essential information. I know Proton is going to really take a deep look at this, since they prioritize Privacy. So I bet Google is getting desperate, and they just made the biggest mistake in the world by demanding an ID from somebody who uses Proton!

Actually no, it’s not. Tricking you into giving sensitive information by false pretension is phishing. If I log into this forum with my username and password the forum is “taking sensitive information”, but it’s not phishing. If another website tricks me into giving it my f-droid forum credentials, that’s phishing.
However, ALOSPA suggests otherwise: Treating any requests for ID online as “Compromising Phishing” where a person could be pressured into presenting their ID or they would be negatively impacted. Spotify did that, so did Discord (Discord was hacked recently, exposing millions of UK IDs), so the definition of Phishing has to be updated to include any attempts to even try to get IDs for verification purposes online. It would shut down Google’s Developer Verification scheme, and it would interfere with various Age Verification laws that are being implemented across the globe. One tiny shift in definition can lead to an inevitable domino effect.
Plus, Proton is another Email service, and Proton, as we all know, is Privacy first.
