helloo, i’ve switched to fennec from mull, but the experience is very bad.
Every page loads slow, there is so much lag when scrolling, js based websites are a nightmare. I cant even type to post this message, text is added so slow, so much delay. Takes 20+seconds just to load the forum homepage, phone is getting very hot.
Is there any to tweak it.
Also, why is it making a connection to gitlab? And how to deny it?
Device? Android version?
Use your firewall lol
@relan the gitlab connection was related to wallpapers?
140 was just published, can you update and retest?
Also, which extensions do you have installed?
the gitlab connection was related to wallpapers?
Yes. Can we host them on a F-Droid-controlled host? This connection to gitlab.com concerns many people.
Think it was proposed before, buuuuuuuuut then people will see it and ask “why is fennec connecting to fdroid? R U tracking me?”
According to RethinkDNS logs the connection to gitlab may be what is causing the extreme delays in the latest version of the browser.
Again I find a “con” that discourages me from using Fennec - first it is a second slowest browser amongst tested (Firefox vanilla, Iceraven, Waterfox) just after IronFox which is literally impossible to use. Iceraven has no such issues and Waterfox had major flaw year and half ago (auto fill not working for a few months).
Now the Fennec been just born and it’s… Impossible to use because of that delay.
Thank you for this. I’m also seeing the browser randomly appear to hang on websites with the latest update, even websites on my private internal network. I can restart the browser and then the pages load promptly. But then, a little while later pages start loading slowly again. Perhaps your comment about the gitlab connection is the culprit.
that’s another issue: Version 142 fails to load sites after first restart (#134) · Issues · relan / fennecbuild · GitLab
@Licaon_Kter it looks like extensions on new versions fail to load (do not confuse with install) after some open/close
For example Adguard.
Android 15. Samsung S23
Setting DNS to Google helped but after some hours of inactivity there were again 30s delays for loading the first pages.
Quite clearly, when opening a webpage using a shortcut Fennec as a first thing does a TCP/443 request to gitlab which for some reason is stale for more than a minute. After some time Fennec starts loading the pages anyway even though the other request was still unanswered.
Someone who doesn’t use gitlab could try block the domain to see if that solves the problem.
this is for wallpapers
and blocking gitlab does not improve anything, I tested
So many internal and external components that could be at fault.
Quite possibly the issue has been already lurking for some time and some unrelated change made it the killer bug.
For ages I have been wondering… every time I closed a Tab with “back” I saw a short message “could not change wallpaper”. So assuming the wallpaper connection to gitlab was not working since a long time and by some unrelated change this might have become a blocker.
Is there anything special about that gitlab connection? Looking at RethinkDNS logs I see consistently delays of 18-120s to deliver something like 10kB.
Some other connections show similar behavior
Does it matter? Did Mozilla require newer?
Firefox build system is very complicated, it consists of several toolchains with various LLVM versions.
We don’t replicate this setup 1:1 because this would make our builds even more time-consuming and harder to maintain.
