F-Droid endorses the United Nations Open Source Principles

The F-Droid Board of Directors is pleased to announce our endorsement of the United Nations Open Source Principles.
These principles were introduced by Open Source United, an interagency consortium of the United Nations, and were developed in partnership with a wide set of stakeholders across the FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) ecosystem.

United Nations Open Source Principles

  1. Open by default: Making Open Source the standard approach for our projects

  2. Contribute back: Encouraging everyone to actively participate in the Open Source ecosystem

  3. Secure by design: Making security a priority in all our software projects, not just Open Source

  4. Foster inclusive participation and community building: Enabling and facilitating diverse and inclusive contributions from all, while creating a supportive and collaborative environment

  5. Design for reusability: Designing projects with the intent to be reused by other teams and organizations, through service-agnostic architecture components, configurability, easy installation, and modularity

  6. Provide Documentation: Providing thorough documentation for end-users, integrators, and developers to ensure the value of the project

  7. RISE (Recognize, Incentivize, Support, and Empower): Welcoming participation from all, empowering individuals and communities to actively participate, raise awareness, and acquire skills in Open Source

  8. Sustain and scale: Supporting the development of solutions that are sustainable in the long term and scalable to meet the evolving needs of the UN system and beyond

F-Droid itself is committed to supporting and promoting the freedom of computer users, especially with regard to mobile devices. Although we were not involved in the development of the United Nations Open Source Principles, we think they align closely with our own goals, and see them as being a significant positive step in furthering the cause of software freedom globally.

We’d also like to bring attention to the United Nation’s invitation for other organizations to join in support of the United Nations Open Source Principles. If you represent an organization which would like to do so, you can register your endorsement on this form on CryptPad.

Finally, the UN Open Source Week 2025 is underway at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, facilitating “global dialogue and collaboration on open source, digital public infrastructure (DPI), and the development of innovative solutions to global challenges”. Make sure to tune into the online live video streams if that interests you!
