Degoogle "Cutting Google out of your life"

Hi

I am very new to Android and F-Droid.

I use those recommendation for Google alternatives:

is there a better list or guide for F-Droid newbies?

If essential apps (with privacy focus) are missing in https://degoogle.jmoore.dev/#mobile-apps please list them here

There’s a lot of wrong there, stuff like Signal (built in google libs) but not Conversations (fully open source).

there is no iPhone client, lots of friends have iPhone :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

There’s no F-Droid for iOS either, right? No Fennec, no…

is there a better list or guide for F-Droid newbies?

PrivacyTools dot io is OK too. Be aware there are many different opinions, and disagreements on some basic concepts.

With sophisticated “fingerprinting” and G66gle and their partners imbedded in almost every website, it can seem like a futile effort, but we can put up the good fight anyway.

On iOS you have a number of XMPP choices:

Siskin and its macOS complement Beagle. Their recent 4.0 update notably has support for 1:1 calling with Conversations.
ChatSecure which used to have Tor support, but appears no longer :frowning:
Monal which works on both iOS and macOS.

All have OMEMO support.

…for 1:1, only CS has for groups (since July 2018 none the less). But yeah…time…

I have found ChatSecure to be unusable with encrypted OMEMO groups. Because of that, I switched to using Element. Element - Secure Messenger | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository It has good support on Android, iOS, and desktop.

Those desiring can also run their own Matrix server, although there are existing cloud servers that can be used as well. I run my own Matrix Synapse server on a Debian box. Debian -- Error
