I’d like to ask if we could discuss our AI policy during the next meeting. I know it’s a contentious topic, to put it mildly, but I think it’s time we put something down in writing, even if it’s not something we stick with long term. A lot of our users are looking for direction on the topic and it’s occupying a lot of space in the forum and GitLab.
Interesting article! It brings up some interesting points, but one that I’d like to head off is that one that people will submit LLM-generated code regardless.
This is true, but it’s an issue that comes up a lot in my IRL professional life, and it should never be used as an excuse for not making and/or changing a policy. The policy exists to protect the organization, and as a guide for when problems crop up. It is true that if, say, we approved a policy that banned the use of “vibe-coded” (that is, no human written code whatsoever) apps, people would try to submit them anyway, but when and if they got identified, we point to the policy for how to deal with them. You don’t avoid passing laws against stealing just because people are going to steal anyway. The law may get broken from time to time, but it gives you a pathway for dealing with if after the fact.
Just wanted to touch on that, since it is something I’ve seen come up a lot in this discussion among our users.
