Privacy protecting periodical apps at least for some regions in the world.

ā€œFor instance, the recent attempt by Texas legislators to make abortion a capital offense, punishable by death, and the Ohio ā€˜heartbeat billā€™, outlawing abortion once a heartbeat can be detected.ā€ Given this climate, Dubrofsky notes, ā€œapps such as Ovia are particularly concerning for their potential to further restrict the rights of women to have control over their bodies, make womenā€™s access to affordable healthcare increasingly precarious, and put womenā€™s jobs at riskā€.

So a few of these are ā€œbestā€ and possibly a few ā€œunderratedā€, but mostly
theyā€™re simply just some that I use or likeā€¦

Aurora (better Play Store)

The majority of the ā€œFossifyā€ suiteā€¦particularly:
Fossify Gallery
&
Fossify File Explorer

(Ghost Commander is also good.
think-Total Commander.
There are a lot of File Explorers,
but Fossify File Explorer is a staple,
even if there are better file managers that
you can also keep on hand)

Keepass (secure password manager)
(Many others; Passky, and other offline local and/or secure PWMs, and Proton Pass, etc)

ProtonVPN
(Actually the entire Proton suite *but needs a repo, canā€™t remember which, otherwise theyā€™re obviously on Aurora Store-
Proton Pass password manager
Proton Wallet w Bitcoin
Proton Drive cloud
Proton Calendar
Proton Mail)

Find My Device (FMD)

NewPipe (YouTube-with some features removed, but adds many others like Direct downloads, Background play, etc)

GreyJay *needs ā€œFUTOā€ repository-easy (Follow the video creators, not the platforms-has the main streaming services, YouTube, Rumble for when youtube bans or censors your fav creators, and many more listed in like a ā€œcreators feedā€ all in one app, one place.
Google hates this app apparently.
Its also made by Luis Rossman & team, so that prob doesnt help matters ha)

Cirrus (private weather)
But I will be checking out the one posted earlier, never came across it, could be better?

Destiny (secure/private/encrypted file transfer app)

DroidFS (also tansfers-AirDroid replacement?)

PlainApp (access device files, messages, etc by opening a browser and typing the address. Also transfer but doesnā€™t need app installed on Both devices like most other quick file/media transfer apps. Can be access from outside your network, but if device is in different location, would need a way to press ok on a confirmation dialogue that pops up.)

SMS Backup+ *Works well, but no longer maintained? Anybody know a good alt?

Stasis (Secure private Backup & Recovery)

Syncthing (File Synchronization and open cloud service replacement)

VLC (Android version of the popular media player)
(Or Nova video player)

Collabra Suite *needs collabra(?) Repo (Microsoft office replacement)

Image Toolbox

Aves Libre (gallery & metadata explorer with extensive file format abilities)

Calendar Import-Export (used ics file without Google)

RustDesk (Remote device access software/TeamViewer alternative - asfak AnyDesk isnā€™t on FDroid)

APK Explorer and Editor

Advanced PortChecker(simple, scans portS instead of typing them individually like some web services)

Shizuku *need izzyOnDroid repo -easy and has a lot of apps (Shizuku allows root access in many situations normally not easy or possible, some without having a rooted phone at all)

Kiwix *need izzyOnDroid repo -easy and has a lot of apps (Kiwix - Wikipedia Offline plus Wiktionary, etc)

InviZible Pro (online security and privacy software
Tor, DNS crypt, i2p)

Onion Share

And of courseā€¦
The Guardian Project apps *need guardian repo -easy
Tor utilities
Orbot
Orfox is no longer maintained
Etc

There are also apps for:

Private and/or secure Keyboards which are getting better every month(replace Googles GBoard)

2FA (2 factor authentication)

App scanners to give warnings/find trackers/etc

Location Spoofers and others

Video Downloaders

Private package tracking

Offline Maps

Offline and Live public Transit

Offline Dictionaries

Offline Translators

Offline ā€œoff gridā€ Voice & Video calls
(ā€œMeshengerā€ have not yet tried)

***Important:
I think these lists are a good time to mention this.

When youā€™re finished installing and and make sure each app starts;
Go ahead and send each app group at Least $1.

If itā€™s only a dollar per app, thatā€™s fine;
but then make sure to choose a set day of your liking, or holidays, tax time, whatever is easiest for you,

And resend that same $1 every year,

until you can send $2. :+1:

Iā€™m saying this especially if you are similar to me.
ā€¦Not a dev, wonā€™t moderate, and I have little time.
Thereā€™s not much else I can do to try to contribute.
So this is what I have to do.

People that canā€™t give back much, or donā€™t want to, only have to return a FRACTION of what we Take. Thatā€™s a hell of a deal.

These people seldom ask;
aside from a tiny ā€œbuy me a coffeeā€ button or link.
And this should inherently make people want to reward that also.

This scene is a breath of Fresh Air
Letā€™s keep it alive.

Anyhow,
This is nothing but an over simplified quick list from a non expert.

Some, I may not have used in a while.
Corrections welcome.

Only recently have I began to go back through and Re examine the newer apps and previous 2nd, 3rd, 5th options in alot of categories; because it looks as though many apps, new and old, might be starting to form into real contenders in their spaces.
Also some have began to simply carve out separate mini niches, which is good to see again.

Originally I started to go back and look into some things because, for whatever reasonā€¦
(prob becauseā€¦fk Google? and if so, Iā€™m here for it)
ā€¦There seems to have been a flourishing,
So to speak,
inside of Fdroid and open source in general;
Just a fairly visible uptick in overall progress
and substantial updates from many of these other options, kind of across the board.

Naturally, I could be wrong; and of course these apps and Fdroid have always been growing themselves and each other,
but this seems like an additional expansion of sorts, which has been recent, as far as I can tell anyway.

Even Fdroid themselves are going through some reasonably big changes apparently.

So either Iā€™m taking too long to check up on progress,
or we have something kinda cool happening.

Either way, weā€™re living in a great time.

Hope this helps

ā€¦it took longer to type out than Iā€™m willing to admit.

I recommend Obtainium | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository for installing kiwix from their download directory.

QR Scanner ā€” by SECUSO ā€” advanced QR-code scanner.

Material Files ā€” good file manager with lot of functions.

UnicodePad ā€” all symbols of Unicode.

Ghost Commander ā€” another advanced file manager that I use combining with Material Files.

Ameixa ā€” good icon-pack.

Activity Manager ā€” very good activity launcher and activity shortcuts.

OpenCamera Sensors ā€” better than OpenCamera with new needed functions.

WebCall ā€” very good app that allows to safely call through browser to numbers or nicknames (you are getting a number in the app and can add additional numbers or nicknames) or call to the other numbers in app or browser.

Download Navi ā€” good download manager.

Unexpected Keyboard ā€” very advanced keyboard that I use.

There are many apps, which are good or very good. But these are the best ones for me in 2024.

  • Fossify Kalender. Finally I found an app, that can help me in offline managing my job recurring activities with a lot of exceptions.
  • KDE Connect. As KDE-Linux user is this app absolutely indispensable for me. The improvements in the last two years were remarkable.

The delusion app
Shopping List (SECUSO). I liked this app very much, because it is very flexible and therefore usable not only to manage shopping lists, but also many other types of collections.
But this summer I had to change smartphone and realised, that the related backup app (also by SECUSO) cannot restore his own backups! So a lot of data (some of they very important) are on the old phone yet.

My app ofc
