Slider for Wi-Fi is set to never.
Slide it to middle or right and for interval slide it to right.
Go to main page and pull from page topto down to refresh.
Recheck.

If the right position is update, and middle position is “never”, what happens in the left position?
Left = never
Middle = when clicked
Right = always
Err, meaning? & where?

The text above each slider explains its current value.
Slide them left right, multiple times and see how they change and what they say.
F-Droid won’t do any action “automatically” if you choose 'manual" or “never”.
You want autoupdates? Slide them to the right.
Manual refresh is separate.
That legend appeared to be a sub-heading for the whole function rather than an explanation for one particular slider position, hence I never tinkered with it. Now that I know different I am tempted to fiddle with all sorts of settings. A less ambiguous design would be helpful for these adjustments.
It’s a legacy slider, yes, not yet touched by modernity.
