After viewing this article in Hacker News https://www.ikkaro.com/en/best-f-droid-apps/ I would like to know if there is any way to see the most popular or the most downloaded applications from F-droid

No, there’s not
It has been discussed and written about at length, but nothing yet AFAIK. Too many uncertainties involved, if you don’t sacrifice the “we don’t track you” thing.
What about in the category area “new apps” or “latest apps” would be good to have.
There’s a Client section for that called “Latest”
Right, @Nick1980 asks for recommendations from that list. 
But @Nick1980 , what kind of apps interest you?
I have probably asked this in the wrong place. I was just giving my 2 cents on a feature for the fdroid app as in a tab with “new apps” or “latest release” or something as I’m always scrolling through the main page on the app to check what’s new.
Im using a older version of the fdroid app. I have never seen new apps in the categories or is this web based only or newer version of app? Im using version 1.13.1 due to newer versions causing issues.
Not sure how Categories are sorted though. “Latest” covers all apps
