Accidental touches while phone in pocket

I have my grandad using lineageos10. I have setup screen lock on the device, but while the phone is in the pocket(tight pockets?) It manages to turn the screen on, swipe left/right, up/down, and to go to the notification screen, from there the pocket continues to pull down the status bar, and to turn wifi on/of, do not desturb mode, etc… It is quite not pleasant when your grandad doesn’t pick up the phone for 2 days, just because he doesn’t notice that the silent mode is turned on. And I cant call to explain that he needs to turn it of because… well, you get it…
So I can’t just replace the buttons with useless ones, because he sometimes actually wants silent mode, and what ever else he told me to put on there…
Is there a way to actually lock the screen on the pattern(i don’t care about security, just that the pocket doesn’t fiddle with the notification area), instead of being able to go left, right, and wherever…

I remember my nokia 3310 not allowing me to do anything unless i type in the password xD android should be the same…

LineageOS has an option on select devices to prevent the screen from turning on if the proximity sensor is covered.
I cannot recall if it is under the display, security, or buttons Settings section however.

In lineageos the option to prevent the screen turning on is in settings > display > advanced > prevent accidental wake-up.

If that doesn’t work, you could try an app like WaveUp (Turn on the screen by waving) - WaveUp | F-Droid - Free and Open Source Android App Repository that not only turns off the screen when the proximity sensor is covered but also allows automatic reactivation when the proximity sensor is no longer covered.

I just gave waveup a spin, looks promising. Will try that next. For now i turned off gesture navigation, and enabled the 3 button nav bar, in the hopes that the small hitbox of the back button will prevent the back action that results in the pattern view going back to notification area…

On a side note, I installed Simple SMS Remote on my wife’s phone, so I can turn up the ringer volume in case she’s turned it off. Works miracles to find back her misplaced phone (coat pocket, one of several backpacks, between bed and bedside cabinet, …), unless Xiaomi has decided to kill the app in the background.
This may help with your grandfather’s phone as well.
