Google will require developer verification to install Android apps, including sideloading

Yes, of course all developers need registration. What I meant specifically is that they now claim it is for security and they will use this to stop distribution of malware. But it is easy to see how this will be applied to other software, e.g. preventing distribution of apps the government dislikes.

As I said, but you clearly got too distracted by the colourful idiom involving eggs to notice;

I’m not “peddling” anything. Assuming that I am is a) reading out of context, and b) assuming ignorance on my part. Neither of which are helpful nor appreciated.

That is why we need to get off the Android ecosystem and attendant apps.F-Droid is a stop gap until real alternatives, not sanctioned by the state and attendant corporate lobbyists, emerge. Europe made some positive steps with the likes of Jolla, Fairphone et al, it would be nice if North America can get as imaginative and come up with something a little more mature than the Pine64 devices. Users here bemoan a company whose products we use putting more screws to us. Are there not enough of us to move to a better self created ecosystem? Or create a Linux like system that can take a phone and install a fresh OS not tied to the Evil Empire? To bring new life to older devices even?

Hence the Arceus 2600, Arceus AOS & Arceus LOS.

In a word: no. Most people do not know or do not care about the predations of the major tech companies, leaving too few of us who do care to be a viable market for any manufacturer to produce an economical phone or an OS. Look at the disastrous mess that was the Librem 5. Over priced, over due, and clunky. I am not sure even now if it is selling.

Plus, we still have Shizuku (Plus Install with Options & Installer X Revived) & AnyAPK, which work via ADB. So Google hasn’t completely locked out Android yet.

If users do not know or care, than they deserve the Google ecosystem and its attendant lockdowns. For those who care about some level of social justice, the Fairphones, Jolla and Pine 64 devices et al provide precedent. You do need to know and care, or you are part of the problem.

You keep forgetting that this gives Google power that will inflict upon you later, gives it monopoly on stuff that impacts you today, it’s not a “them”-only problem

That’s why I didn’t respond to that.

@Licaon_Kter Encouraging alternative mobile ecosystems and buying from other than complicit ‘Empire’ manufacturers would not help Google. Though there is something called the imperial boomerang coined by AimĂ© CĂ©saire in her discourse on colonialism. It is totally okay for companies to oppress/murder people in other countries as part of their business model. But what goes around, comes around. You give a shit because it is wrong, and if you are a sociopath, then at least think that this will come bite you in the ass.

But really, if there is a (good) choice beyond Google / iOS , we would not give two passes of gas what Google does with lockdowns. But if something released is ‘Lord Vader’ (Motorola) approved, then it’s just as toxic as anything else.

Shutting down all options because they are not perfect will leave us empty handed

Europeans are not empty handed. We need some of that imagination and enterprising creativity here in North America.

We are empty handed India wise at least. AI crap and lazy bums copying just like current Bollywood from the last 26 years. Ohh not to forget foogle giving free space and email to get the data which 99% of Indians do not bother with. So yeah, I am with @MAU in his point here. If only something could be done.

India (among other countries) was supposed to get FirefoxOS . If it was in North America, I would have snapped it up. A low cost device ecosystem that could have grown, alas.

India has the choice of American (Google Android) or Chinese (HarmonyOS), but for now, thankfully, all have F-Droid until The Empire says otherwise.

@vdbhb59 Thanks for solidarity.

Of course, Arceus AOS is still being planned, so if it’s possible to bootload on other Android devices, it could be a literal jailbreak, which would essentially crumble Motorola because of a sudden shift, which would also cause France to panic because their encryption demands would be demolished by my sheer intelligence.

I’m not sure that’s ever been entirely true, and it’s certainly not true now. Many people no longer trust US technofascists like Goggle and grApple and would love to have a libre mobile option. But it’s a collective action problem; devs don’t want to port their apps to a new OS until device manufacturers commit to shipping devices. They can’t do that until they’re sure people will buy them. People can’t commit to buying it if they don’t know whether there will be apps for them, etc.

The iThing monopoly was broken by organising device manufacturers and devs around the Android/Linux platform, using the Open Handset Alliance. This is the sort of thing we need to do again, but this time as a genuine commons, not controlled and run in the interests of Goggle. Something more like the E Foundation. But maybe built around mobile GNU/Linux instead of an Android/Linux fork.

Libre 5 has been available for sale for years now. As for overdue, when you’re developing your own mobile device for the consumer market, aiming to use only 100% Free Code software, I’ll watch with interest to see whether you meet every single one of your delivery milestones without a hitch ; )

A brand new Libre 5 is US$800. If you compare that to a new iPhone, it’s a pretty competitive price. That’s the market Purism decided to go for, because they’re a new company with R&D costs to pay off, expecting to sell a small number of devices at first. If increased demand can be shown, then Purism and other companies can develop cheaper models for a mass market.

As a precedent, look at the difference in price between the first car Telsa put on the market, and the cheaper mass market models it sells now. Or the even cheaper mass market models sold by old and richer car companies, once Tesla had proved the existence of mass demand for EVs.

Side note: Purism are now also offering the Liberty Phone, which was manufactured 100% in the US. Despite avoiding tariffs it still costs more than twice was the Libre 5 costs, which illustrates the degree to which sweatshot labour by Chinese workers subsidises the cheap purchase price of most electronic hardware.

Well, I’m considering adding F-Droid itself to the list, reason being: They don’t respect the First Amendment and they don’t respect Free Speech, I raised a valid complaint that 2.0 was bad because the UI is too close to Material 3, which already has some serious hatred because Google itself is forcing it down our throats, and F-Droid is following suit, and now I can’t update apps from it without updating F-Droid (A serious Freedom of Choice violation).

Not to mention the staff deleted 2 of my posts without my consent, which should paint a bad picture about how abusive the staff can ultimately be, this is exactly what happened on FurAffinity last year! Seriously, this is absolutely horrid staff behavior to not understand and accept a valid complaint.

You were explained why those posts were hidden.

sorry for my language but what the - is happening now? i was kind of following the happenings and now it seems all messed up again (for me). earlier i read that there is 2 ways to go around 1-advanced flow 2-adb. but now the advanced flow or how its called is what all the focus is on, and it being on gplay services and useless time with warning screens all around etc etc. did the adb way got -ed as well or why is no one (!) mentioning it? should be mentioned since setting up anyapk or InstallWithOptions is (by now) way faster and simpler even for average users,i even have the muscle memory for IWO and shizuku setup even tho i don’t even need it yet.
