Vector Privacy Chat App

Source: https://vectorapp.io/

Has there been any talks of this app being added to fdroid?

Typically i’m using the exodusprivacy website to scan apps for permissions and trackers before installing them, can’t do that with vector as it’s neither on fdroid nor the disgusting google playstore.

I’m primarily making this thread to hopefully find out if the vector chat app is trustworthy or not, and why it’s not on fdroid and if it might ever be.

PS: also wondering about this one, https://0xchat.com/

Err no from my side.

Edit: finally found the source code. It was in front of my eyes. I mean for both.
I am just confused if they really care for privacy as stated? Self hostable?

Could you elaborate why no?

anyone can open an Issue in Issues · F-Droid / Requests For Packaging · GitLab or a merge request with the recipe in Merge requests · F-Droid / Data · GitLab

board member or not

Hey! Vector developer here, this thread was brought to my attention by a community member. :folded_hands:

Vector is FOSS under the MIT license, that includes Client, SDK, and Infrastructure (Relay + File Store servers), you can self-host Vector entirely by running the Infrastructure stack yourself and adding it to the Vector client (currently, via source).

Privacy comes first in Vector, the architecture prioritizes it, is there anything else I should clarify?

We have user-facing documentation that explains the majority of Vector, the architecture, client, and its capabilities, as well: https://docs.vectorapp.io

Appreciate it!

F-Droid has been in my sight for a while, but I’ve been focusing on polishing the app for Android before pivoting to distribution, there are still a few bits lacking on Android compared to our Desktop Client. I also need to create reproducible build scripts for F-Droid, so that’s something on my TODO list likely for January, after I patch out the last few mobile issues.

Thanks for the thread, I’ll revisit this when we’re in a better position to submit the app, just came to clarify some points and lay out my plans. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :green_heart:

Amazing! The dev himself joined to say hi

Looks like this will be going in a great way!

Naturally polishing your product makes sense before distribution!

I can’t speak too much but it does seem to be FOSS under the MIT license.

It also seems to be one of. The more popular messenger picks amongst Nostr users which makes sense I suppose.

There haven’t been any real talks about adding Vector to and the “err no” from a board member makes it pretty clear it’s not planned. Since it’s not on F-Droid or Play Store, it’s hard to properly audit — same goes for 0xchat..

MOD EDIT: Please stop posting your PDF tool links every time you comment. Links removed. Your tools do not have a source code as well. This is just a point. That does not mean you keep adding your link every time.

Let me explain a bit more.
My err no should have been clear, and that is my fault. I was meaning to say, I do not wish to use it myself, and it is hard to get my parents and people in India to even tell about XMPP (even though billions have used gtalk and rediffbol, yahoo chat, all on XMPP protocol), how would I even start with this Nostr stuff? You are an Indian yourself, think about it from an end user pov, and the level of invasive nature of whatsapp within people’s brain.

Also, as LK mentions, a board member can state his/her point, but we need to have a unanimous vote to get things rejected/approved, if it comes to that level. This app to be added or not, does not come under such remit, and is based on principals of app inclusion policies.

It seems that many users have such thoughts. An app is not on F-Droid doesn’t mean it’s excluded by F-Droid or it’s not trustworthy or anything. If no one packages it, or the author doesn’t want it to be packaged, then it won’t be included. F-Droid doesn’t include all good FOSS apps automatically.
