At first the apps wouldn’t down load and update then they turned black?
Usually that’s just an icon caching issue.
You’d need to fiddle with F-Droids web settings. But I can’t remember which.

Yup, in F-Droid Settings move mobile data slider all the way to the right 
Where would I go to find the slider?
Um, you were just told? In F-droid app, click on that Settings on lower right, find Over data slider and move it all the way to the right
